Australia's first triangular coin marks Parliament House's quarter of a century

Australia's first triangular coin has been minted to mark the 25th anniversary of Australian Parliament House. The silver $5 coin and a special 20c coin were produced by the Royal Australian Mint and were officially launched at Parliament House today.

The triangular $5 fine silver proof coin is 99.9% silver and depicts Australian Parliament House as viewed from one of its courtyards. The world renowned triangular flag mast is the focal point of the design. Just 10,000 of the coins have been minted.

The 20c uncirculated coin is made of cupro nickel. Its design features Australian Parliament House with Old Parliament House in the foreground.

"Australian Parliament House was recognised as a major international architectural achievement when it was opened by Queen Elizabeth II on this same day 25 years ago," said The Hon Bernie Ripoll MP, Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasurer.

"It is fitting that the Mint is demonstrating its own innovation within a minting context with Australia's first triangular coin," said Mr Ripoll.

Department of Parliamentary Services Secretary, Carol Mills was presented with a set of the collectable coins during today's official launch. Students from Reddam House, Leongatha Primary School and Armidale's Presbyterian Ladies College, who were visiting Parliament House during school excursions, also took part in the celebration.

"It is great to see the future of our country, these school children, celebrating this important milestone with us on our birthday morning. What an honour it is to have Australia's first triangular coin mark this moment," said Ms Mills.
