Final US Mint ATB Coin Designs: NEW ALABAMA COIN
In 2019, the United States Mint marked the 10th anniversary of the “America the Beautiful Quarters” program. From 2010 to 2020, the United States Mint issued Quarter coins featuring national parks and sites to commemorate history. Finally, the program reaches its conclusion with the release of the last 6 ATB silver coins. THE UNITED STATES MINT HISTORY
The United States Mint was initially established in 1792 by the US Congress. Subsequently, in 1873, the mint became a part of the Department of the Treasury. As the Nation’s primary manufacturer of legal tender coinage, the US Mint develops circulating coinage for trade and business purposes. Lastly, it is among the oldest branches of the government.
THE BIG REVEAL
On August 13th, 2019, the US Mint revealed the final designs for the last six “America the Beautiful” Quarters. The announcement took place at the American Numismatic Association’s World’s Fair.
The newest coin and final design is slated for release at the end of March 2021. The final coin design in the program honors the Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site in Alabama.
The last five coin designs in “America the Beautiful” Quarters Program were released in 2020. The esteemed artists from the US Mint created the designs while the Mint’s skilled engravers sculpted the coins. The designs will honor the following national parks and sites:

NEWEST RELEASE: 2021 Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site
Finally, the newest release will be Chris Costello’s 2021 design honoring the Tuskegee Airmen. Most importantly, this 2021 ATB release is the final coin of the program.
Previously, it was prohibited for Black Americans to participate in the US military. So, unfortunately, in addition to fighting against hostile forces, these soldiers first had to prove they possessed the intellect, abilities, and special skills to be successful and eligible fighters. As a result, various civil rights groups pressured the United States Army Air Corps (Air Force) to allow Black soldiers. Eventually, they decided to train a few Black American pilot cadets at Tuskegee University. The training took place primarily at Moton Field, the first training facility for Black American pilot candidates during the second World War. The great success experienced by the Tuskegee Airmen proved to the public that Black Americans could become effective military leaders and pilots. This historically significant event paved the way for the desegregation in the military.

National Park of American Samoa
The
first coin for the 2020 ATB series was released earlier in 2020. Known for its conservation efforts, the Samoa National Park preserves the only mixed-species paleotropical rainforest in the United States. Consequently, Richard Masters’ striking design depicts a mother Samoan fruit bat hanging upside down. Additionally, the mother also holds her young pup in a heartfelt embrace. Conservationists strive to protect the National Park of American Samoa because it remains the only park in the United States that the Samoan Fruit Bats inhabit. Accordingly, the artwork on the coin serves to promote awareness of the species’ endangered status caused by habitat loss and commercial hunting.

Weir Farm National Historic Site
Designer Justin Kunz designed this peaceful image. Specifically, an artist paints outside a studio at Weir Farm on this coin. Kunz reportedly drew inspiration from several images of the studio and impressionist painter Julian Alden Weir’s art produced on the farm. In the 1800s, the rural environment frequently inspired Weir and his fellow artists. Converted from a farm, Weir founded this artist sanctuary in Connecticut after leaving New York. This farm has acres of beautiful gardens, woods, orchards, and ponds on top of the historical structures of houses, studios, and barns. Furthermore, Weir’s farm also is the site of many “Art in the Park” programs that offers art lessons and free art supplies to participants. This is one of the two places in the National Park Service dedicated to visual arts. The Weir Farm continually inspires artists to this day.

Salt River Bay National Historical Park and Ecological Preserve
As a US Territory, the Virgin Islands is a collection of islands and islets in the Caribbean. Specifically, St. Croix is one of those islands, and this is where you can find the Salt River Bay National Historic Park and Ecological Preserve. Firstly, Congress established this in 1992 to protect threatened and endangered species by preserving the watersheds, mangrove forests, and marine environments for threatened species. Furthermore, the Red Mangrove is occasionally referred to as a “Walking Tree.” This is because it gives the illusion through its roots that it is walking on water. These trees are essential to their surrounding ecosystem since they provide homes for crustaceans, fish, birds, mammals, and reptiles. Additionally, they help form large coastal forests throughout the tropics.

Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park
The Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park inherited its name from four notable people who participated in either its conservation or dedication. Among the first American environmentalists, George Perkins Marsh grew up here in the early 1800s. He was a lawyer and the first modern thinker to theorize that humans could impact climate. Also, he wrote Man and Nature in which he argued deforestation would lead to desertification. This led to the creation of Adirondack Park.
In 1869, lawyer and financier Frederick Billings purchased the late Marsh’s home. After reading his book, Billings was inspired to reforest much of the surrounding area. Later, in 1992, Laurance and Mary Rockefeller donated the land and house to the National Park Service. Because this forest began in the 1800s, it is the oldest managed park in the United States. Thus, this established what is now known as the Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park. Today, it is the only national park dedicated to land stewardship and conservation. Located in Woodstock, Vermont, visitors can take advantage of guided tours of the house, and enjoy lovely walks through the gardens and trails.
In artist Donna Weaver’s design, a young girl plants the Norway Spruce seedling by an established tree. The girl symbolizes conservationists trying to maintain a sustainable forest for future enjoyment and education, while the seedling represents new life, struggling to grow. In short, the image encourages the public to maintain the life cycle of the forest.

Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve
This coin features a design that celebrates the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve in Kansas. This preserve protects a significant part of the tallgrass prairie system. Also, this is mostly in the area of Flint Hills, Kansas. Furthermore, a vast amount of species make their homes here, including the bison herd introduced in 2009 that grows in number every year. Among the bison also lives the Monarch butterfly, an important pollinator in danger of extinction. Many other butterflies also live in this ecosystem, including the Regal Fritillary.
Emily Damstra’s design portrays a skyward view of a Regal Fritillary Butterfly, flying in the tall grass. Specifically, the tall grass is of the species known as Big Bluestem and Indian grass. The Fritillary Butterfly is generally native to the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve.
