Super Bowl Coin Toss History, Results, and Trends
Every single Super Bowl has started with a coin toss to determine who will get the ball to start the game and which half of the field belongs to each team. Betting on that coin toss is still a somewhat new thing, however. Since it has become available it has quickly turned into one of the more popular and interesting Super Bowl props.
As the only true 50-50 proposition you can find, sportsbooks also charge a lot less juice on the coin toss. You can find either “heads” or “tails” available at -103 odds. For comparison, a game between two evenly matched teams generally sees -110 odds offered on each side to win.
As a result, this prop draws the attention of all types of sports bettors. One bettor has reportedly placed a $5,000 bet on the Super Bowl 55 coin toss already, siding with heads for a potential $9,850 return.
We’ve collected all the coin toss results from past Super Bowls, and also looked into how often the team who wins the coin toss goes on to win the game.

As the designated visiting team for Super Bowl 55, the Kansas City Chiefs will be responsible for calling the coin toss. Kansas City did not get to call the toss in last year’s Super Bowl and lost.
Coin Toss Trends
Here are a handful of trends we’ve unearthed from the Super Bowl coin toss results:
- The coin toss has been Tails in six of the last eight Super Bowls
- The team who won the coin toss has lost the Super Bowl in each of the last seven years, and is 24-31 all-time
- The Chiefs are 1-2 in Super Bowl coin tosses, while the Buccaneers are 1-0
- The Cowboys hold the record for most Super Bowl coin toss wins with five
- Heads is 10-7 in Super Bowls held in Florida, and 3-1 in Tampa Bay
- Tails is 20-16 in Super Bowls held in outdoor venues
Now here’s a look at the heads/tails results.
Heads/Tails Records
Heads/Tails | All-Time Record | All-Time Win% | Record in Last 10 | Win% in Last 10 |
---|---|---|---|---|
Heads | 26-29 | 47.3% | 4-6 | 40% |
Tails | 29-26 | 52.7% | 6-4 | 60% |
Even though the probability of each outcome (heads or tails) is split 50-50, the actual outcomes favor tails right now thanks to the recent trend. After Super Bowl 48, we were tied 24-24.

Kansas City has won just eight of 18 coin tosses this season, but are 4-4 when they get to call the toss. One of those losses when calling the toss came in Week 12 at Raymond James Stadium against the Buccaneers.
Each time the Chiefs won, they chose to defer to the second half.
The Buccaneers have won just eight of 19 coin tosses this season, but are 4-4 when their opponent makes the call. Tampa Bay has not won a coin toss yet in the playoffs (0-3). They have been the away team in each, though.
The Bucs have chosen to defer in six of their eight coin toss wins. Their two most recent coin toss wins – Week 16 in Detroit and Week 17 vs Atlanta – saw them opt to receive, however.
