Hey, I heard that I could play anyone I wanted in any playset. Then after buying a few I realized I might get screwed.

I bought individual playsets "twilight of the republic" and "rise against the empire" loose from amazon for a fair price of $4.94 and $6.70 respectively.

I figured I could just buy a few characters for my children and I to enjoy instead of buying the starters.

I got Kylo Ren for myself and Ahsoka for my daughter.

I was looking into these coins and see that I might not even be able to start the rise against the empire playset at all and I might have to play half the game to be able to play with my kid in 2 player.

I was thinking about getting darth maul or darth vader while they are only 9 bucks but I feel like I still might be screwing myself here. Any advice? Thanks!

Every Star Wars character is playable in every Star Wars play set. However, most require that you collect their Champion Coin in that play set to unlock them before they can be used.

Furthermore, in each play set, there are certain characters who can be used freely and do not require a Champion Coin. Let's call these "default characters." You'll need at least one of these characters to start a play set.

Below, I have listed the default characters for each play set.

Twilight of the Rebublic: Anakin Skywalker, Yoda, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Ahsoka Tano

Rise Against the Empire: Luke Skywalker, Leia Organa Han Solo, Chewbacca

The Force Awakens: Rey, Finn, Poe Dameron

Based on the information you provided, you are correct: you won't be able to start the RAGE play set nor can you play the TOTR play set with your daughter from the start. You can still buy the two Darth characters---just make sure to pick up some of the default characters listed above as well.

Also, it's not a mistake that none of the villains are listed as default characters. They all require a Champion Coin even in their "native" play set. For example, you still need to unlock Kylo Ren before he can be used in the TFA play set.

I was always a bad guy kind of person, sith, cobra, decepticons etc. It is very hard for me to even want to buy good guy characters. I guess I could get luke to go on and find some stuff. I read reviews on all the characters and they all seemed to get poor reviews.

they basically said that the non lightsaber characters werent as fun and several of them weren't as fun due to being generic. Not that they were bad, but they just weren't the best if they had to be ranked.

It's just their opinions though, that second article is stupid for being biased against Anakin just because of the Prequels.

I have every single Star Wars figure (Light FX ones aswell) minus Boba Fett (I'll get him when he's released).

The coins are spread throughout, so some characters you can unlock basically right away, others not for a couple hours in.

Some characters' coins can be found very early while others are obtained as late as near the end of the game. It depends on which play set and which characters we're talking about.

For now, I'll address the charcaters you Kylo Ren and Ahsoka and then the villains.
