Platinum American Eagle coins debuted in 1997, more than a decade after the gold and silver versions of the popular coin program were unveiled. While the latter coins in the program featured historic coin designs on the obverse, the US Mint turned to its Chief Engraver for a fresh design of Liberty on the obverse.

Then-US Mint Chief Engraver John Mercanti created a design that focused on the head of the Statue of Liberty, depicting her as she stares off into the future. Known as Portraits of Liberty, this design has continued in use on the obverse of Platinum American Eagle coins since 1997.

The reverse side of Platinum American Eagle coins has been a different story. While the bullion versions of the coin feature the same image annually, the proof coins have a new design theme each year. These 2016-W 1 oz Proof Platinum American Eagle coins feature the second and final Torches of Liberty design.

Created by United States Mint Artistic Infusion Program artist Paul C. Balan and brought to life by US Mint Sculptor-Engraver Joseph Menna, the Torch of Enlightenment depicts Liberty as she holds the torch to her right side and grasps an olive branch to her left. An American bald eagle is featured flying behind her in the background.
