COIN Merges Love, Religion on Indie-Pop EP ‘Green Blue’

Tennessee trio COIN released EP “Green Blue” Friday, the second volume in the indie-pop band’s three-part EP series, “Rainbow Mixtape.” Adding four tracks to the four included on the 2020 EP “Indigo Violet,” “Green Blue” explores an assortment of themes from love to religion.

The EP opens with “Sprite,” which effortlessly blends an angelic vocal performance from lead singer Chase Lawrence with skittering drums. Although the song’s captivating, melodic synths pulled me in, it was the chorus’s catchy lyrics that held me: “Oh, I’m just out of touch / And I’ve just about had enough.” Like the classic lemon-lime soft drink, “Sprite” left me feeling refreshed.

“Sagittarius Superstar (feat. Faye Webster),” originally released in February, is a simple love song perfect for spontaneous, late-night kitchen slow dances under an imaginary disco ball. The lyrics, “Baby, you’re my baby / And I don’t use that term lightly / Maybe, oh just maybe / You understand what you mean to me,” are ones I dream a boy would sing to me. Whether because of the Pisces or the hopeless romantic in me, this track landed a well-deserved spot on my “I think I’m in love” playlist.

If “Sagittarius Superstar” softened my heart, “Turnaround” completely melted it. Backed by soft acoustic guitar, Lawrence’s perfectly imperfect vocals steal the show: “Every time I find myself / I find myself wanting something else / I wander off to something new.” The track’s lyrics beautifully transition from the withdrawn self-reflection to grateful joy, making it my favorite from the EP.

As a Christian, I found “Earth to God” hit close to home for me. Featuring heavy grand piano, the track includes audio from what sounds like a young family’s living room. The track then slowly introduces eclectic musical elements like radio static, light cymbals and warped electric guitar. Amid difficult and lonely times, the track’s lyrics “Maybe you’re working another case / Or we’re just floating in space / Earth to God,” offer solace in the fact that we’re not alone in feeling alone.

“Green Blue” beautifully intermixes soft-spoken vocals with ultra-passionate lyrics — often leaving me speechless. I am very optimistic about COIN’s third and final installment of “Rainbow Mixtape.”
