Where to get your coins counted after TD Bank pulls Penny Arcades

MORE:

CHERRY HILL TWP. -- TD Bank, which has locations across the East Coast and its banking headquarters in Cherry Hill, came under fire last week after the accuracy of its coin-counting devices was called into question.

Recent reports by USA Today and ABC revealed that the Penny Arcade devices -- which count coins and charges a fee for non-TD members -- were not returning accurate counts of deposited coins. In some cases, nearly $50 was miscalculated; in others, less than $1.

"All of our coin counting machines are in the process of being taken out of service, and will be evaluated and retested," a statement from the Canadian-headquartered bank read. "Our machines will be brought back into service when we are satisfied they meet our performance requirements. Additionally, we will be enhancing the routine maintenance and testing of our machines."

According to the Philadelphia Business Journal, TD took over the Penny Arcade machines in 2007 when it acquired Commerce Bank in 2007. The fee imposed for non-TD customers who used a Penny Arcade device is 8 percent of your total deposit.

For those with a stockpile of coins at home who had intended to visit a Penny Arcade in the near future, here are some other options while TD Bank continues to test its devices.

- Coinstar, which imposes a 10.9 percent fee for cash returns, has devices at Acme, Wal-Mart and ShopRite stores.

The device, which is managed by rental kiosk company Outerwall Inc., also offers a gift card option that does not deduct a fee. To find a device near you, visit coinstar.com/findakiosk.

- PNC Bank also has locations with coin-counting devices across South Jersey. To find a PNC site near you, visit apps.pnc.com/locator. PNC does not charge members a fee for using the counters. Non-members are charged 5 percent, a company spokeswoman said Monday.

- Republic Bank boasts free coin-counting services at its Magic Money Machines. Republic Bank locations in New Jersey can be found on its website at myrepublicbank.com.
